Idyllic Dekadeka Island in Milne Bay Province

By MEGAN FIU RA’VU

MILNE Bay is not just another coastal province.

It is one with a huge land mass on the mainland and also blessed with numerous islands, some of which would be the envy of people from other provinces or even from other nations in the world.

There are more than 600 islands in Milne Bay, and about 160 of them are inhabited.

Milne Bay is known for its beautiful coral reefs, diving resorts and the fascinating culture of the people who make their homes on some of its islands.

These islands are the main tourist attractions, especially its diving and snorkeling spots.

The islands are made up of very beautiful white sandy beaches and are settings of some of the most amazing stories that you’ve never heard of.

Beautiful islands of Milne Bay

Of the 600 islands in Milne Bay, there are only 48 popular ones - namely Samarai, Fergusson, Normanby, Woodlark, Kiriwina, Dobu, Misima, Goodenough, Sidedia, Doini, Sanaroa, Tagula, Basilaki, Kwato, Logeia, Dart Reefs, Kitava, Nuakata, Panaeati, Utian, Rossel, Motorina, Boagis, Panapompom, Auriroa, Madau, Hemenahei, Bagaman, Lunn, Renard, Pana Wina, Hastings, Vakuta, Yeina, Kuwanak, Nusam, Panarairai, Kaileuna, Kui, Gulowa, Sariba, Nimoa, Dagadaga Bonarua, Nubara, Populai, Anagusa, Iwa and Dekadeka Island.

Dekadeka Island is one the 48.

Deka Deka Island

Dekadeka Island is a tropical island which is fringed by a beautiful white sandy beach and a coral reef system.

The small island is off to the south-est end of Logea Island, in East Channel.

The island belonged to Logea South Ward, which is in Bwanabwana Rural Local Level Government Area LLG, in the Samarai-Murua district.

The island is part of the Logea Group, and the group is part of Samarai Islands of the Louisiade Archipelago.

Dekadeka Island is just a few minutes dinghy ride from Samarai Island.

I have no doubt that the white sandy beach of Dekadeka will always take your breath away the moment you arrive.

The sight of the island would easily take your mind and soul to faraway Hawaii, in Polynesia.

It is an exotic spot with breathtaking views of an Eden-like beach in some faraway destination in some unknown place in the world.

This is the type of place you can spend a week or two just soaking in the atmosphere and relax, hundreds of miles away from your crowded, noisy, stress-filled town or city life.

This is the spot I came to know some time back during my holidays - a place that etches itself into your memory and will not be washed away by the waves of time.

A place that will make you not want to go back home, a place where you want to stay there forever with nothing but just the beautiful peaceful environment - the white sandy beach, the chirping of birds and the evening breeze, with your toes twiddling in the sand as you sit there enjoying the beautiful sunset.

My two-day stay on Dekadeka

Over the last Christmas vacation, my best friend and I took a five-hour dinghy ride to Logeia Island. We took off at around 3pm from Alotau town and arrived at around 7pm in the night on Logeia.

We spent a night on there and on the next day we took another five-minute dinghy ride across to Dekadeka Island. I planned this trip with a close friend who lives on Logeia Island.

He arranged for our transport and the other logistics.

This was my second time to go to Dekadeka Island, the first time was when I was little and can barely remember everything.

As the dinghy came to a complete stop, I just couldn’t stop admiring the white sandy beach.

The sand is just so fine you could push your hand into it without hurting your fingers, as in brushing against a stone.

I jumped off the boat and ran up the shore barefooted, enjoying the feel of it on my feet.

The others, who were with me, offloaded the things and found a good spot to put up our tents. The wind was blowing strongly so we had to put up our tents under the big trees to prevent the wind from blowing them away.

After putting up our tents, we went around the island exploring it.

The island isn’t that big, the front side is covered with white fine sand however the back of the island is made up of big rocks with waves crashing on them.

These are very good fishing spots where you can catch a lot of fish if you ever think of going there for picnic.

Sunrise and sunset on Dekadeka

One of my best parts while staying on the island is watching the sunrise in the morning and the sunset in the afternoon.

As soon as your wake up from your sleep, the very first thing that will catch your attention is the sunrise and the view looking over to Logeia, Samarai and Sariba Islands.

And after a whole day of swimming, snorkeling and picnic it is likely that you would probably will be so exhausted. However, as you sit there in the afternoon and watch the beautiful sunset on the horizon you will easily forget about everything and just enjoy what nature offers.

If you ever want to get away from your busy life for some time with your friends or family members, Dekadeka Island is the best place to go.

It has everything you need.

Beautiful idyllic Dekadeka will always welcome you with its astonishingly white sandy beach and ocean blue waters.

Why don’t you go there and experience being Robinson Crusoe for a day?
